Have a look at the 6 Full-Time and 10 Part-Time Student Officer roles available - each one is very different and has its own responsiblities.


Full-Time Student Officer Roles

These full-time paid positions run from 1 July, 2020 - 30 June, 2021.

The Students' Union President:

  • Represents students' views on campus and beyond
  • Identifies priority issues for students
  • Co-ordinates the activities of the Union

Any student may stand and vote in this election.

Full-Time Student Officer - Student Officer Protocol (PDF)

This new role replaces the role known as Student Officer Activities.

The Student Officer Campaigns and Engagement:

  • Identifies and organises Students’ Union campaigns
  • Advises and supports students in relation to campaigns
  • Seeks to create a campaigning spirit and develop a sense of community at Queen’s
  • Strives to engage students with the Students’ Union, including clubs and societies, enterprise, employability and volunteering

The Student Officer Education:

  • Represents students' interests relating to their academic studies
  • Helps with any academic problems students might have
  • Works with School/Course Reps to ensure that students have a say about their education

The Officer Equality & Diversity:

  • Works with the Part-Time Student Officers to strengthen the voice of under-represented student groups
  • Organises campaigns on equality and diversity issues
  • Strives to ensure a spirit of diversity and equality of opportunity at Queen’s

Full-Time Student Officer - Student Officer Protocol (PDF)

The Student Officer Postgraduate:

  • Assists with any educational or academic problems that postgraduate students might have
  • Represents postgraduate students to the University to make sure that their education meets their expectations
  • Works with School & Course Reps to make sure that postgraduate students have a say in how their School and Course is run
  • Builds and supports a sense of postgraduate community in Queen’s

The Student Officer Welfare:

  • Represents students' interests relating to their welfare
  • Helps students with any welfare problems like their general wellbeing, mental and sexual health, housing and safety
  • Promotes wellbeing campaigns on campus

Part-Time Student Officer Roles

These voluntary, part-time, unpaid positions run from 1 July, 2020 - 30 June, 2021.

The Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Students' Officer:

  • Is the voice of BAME students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to BAME students
  • Encourages BAME students to become more involved in the Union
  • Highlights instances of racism and discrimination in Queen’s if these occur

Any student who 'self-defines' as being from a BAME background can stand and vote in this election.

The Disabled Students' Officer:

  • Is the voice of disabled students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to disabled students
  • Encourages disabled students to become more involved in the Union
  • Highlights instances of discrimination in Queen’s if these occur

Any student who 'self-defines' as being a disabled student can stand and vote in this election.

This role is currently vacant. The successfully elected candidate may take up the role immediately on their election and remain in the role until 30 June 2021.

The Environmental Officer:

  • Is the leading student voice on environmental and ethical trading issues
  • Campaigns on environmental and ethical trading issues
  • Encourages students to become more involved in environmental and ethical trading activities

The International Students' Officer:

  • Is the voice of international students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to international students
  • Encourages international students to become more involved in the Union
  • Highlights instances of racism and discrimination in Queen’s if these occur

Any student who is recognised by the University as an international student and is not a citizen of national of the UK or Ireland can stand and vote in this election. British citizens ordinarily resident in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man prior to the commencement of their studies can not stand or vote in this election.

The Irish Language Officer:

  • Is the voice of Irish language speaking students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to Irish language speaking students
  • Works with An Cumann Gaelach (QUB) to promote the Irish language on campus
  • Produces Irish language content for campaigns and responds to Irish language communications

The LGBT+ Students' Officer:

  • Is the voice of LGBT+ students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to LGBT+ students
  • Encourages LGBT+ students to become more involved in the Union
  • Highlights instances of discrimination in Queen’s if these occur

Any student who 'self-defines' as being a LGBT+ student can stand and vote in this election.

The Mature and Part-Time Students' Officer:

  • Is the voice of mature and part-time students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to mature and part-time students
  • Encourages mature students and part-time students to become more involved in the Union

Any student who is recognised by the University as a mature student can stand and vote in this election. An undergraduate mature student is one who is at least 21 years of age on the 30 September in academic-year on which they commenced their programme of study. A postgraduate mature student is one who is at least 25 years of age on the 30 September in the academic-year on which they commenced their programme of study.

Any student who is recognised by the University as a part-time student can stand and vote in this election.

The Student Parents' and Carers' Officer:

  • Is the voice of student parents and carers in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to student parents and carers
  • Encourages student parents and student carers to become more involved in the Union

Any student may stand and vote in this election. It would be anticipated that students standing for election have some knowledge of issues experienced by student carers/parents.

  • Is the voice of Trans students in the Union, University and beyond
  • Campaigns on issues of importance to Trans students

Any student who 'self-defines' as being a trans student can stand and vote in this election.
