Our planet is in crisis and it is time for Queens to respond! Vote Anna for Environmental Officer for increased student participation in environmental issues, support in fighting climate change, pressure on Queens to step up, and more student collaboration!

Who am I?

Hi everyone! I’m Anna and I am running to be your Environmental Officer 2022-2023! I am currently studying Liberal Arts and I am a passionate environmentalist. I have taken courses in Carbon Literacy, Environmental Education and Environmental Leadership. I have protested for climate justice, climate bills, and for politicians to wake up to the climate crisis. I am also very passionate about sustainable agriculture and have been involved in sustainable farming movements in Ireland, Portugal, and Palestine, as well as community gardens in Belfast.

Education

I believe that education is the key to empowering people to take action and be more involved. As Environmental Officer I will increase the number of Guest Speakers and activist groups giving talks about climate change as well as increasing Environmental Workshops. I will also ensure that students are aware of existing Queen programmes that relate to the environment.

Supporting students

As Environmental Officer I plan to support student involvement in environmental issues as much as possible. Every month I will compile a list of events and campaigns that are happening inside as well as outside of Queens that relate to the environment and distribute it among students. Furthermore, I will strongly support and promote environmental campaigns, societies and events that are run by students.

I believe that students can also be supported in making more sustainable choices through an increase of water fountains, recycling facilities, availability of environmental period products and sustainable and ethically sourced reusable water bottles and coffee cups.

Pressure on Queens

I plan to ensure that Queens continues to be held responsible to act faster and do better in response to the Climate Crisis. I would like to work with other students to put pressure on Queens to be transparent about its investments, to follow through on its commitment to divesting from fossil fuels, to stop Greenwashing and promoting itself as an environmental leader, and instead actually take strong radical action.

Getting to the root of the problem

Climate change is a complex problem and we should all know that it is going to take more than reusable straws to tackle it. The climate crisis is inextricably linked with society, economics, politics, and people’s way of life. It needs people from all walks of life to come together. For this reason as Environmental Officer I would advocate for events that promote collaboration across the student body. I believe that it is important that we work together to address the root causes of the various issues we are dealing with. We are stronger together!
