Please Vote Chloe #1 for C&E!
About me and my Experience
Hi! I’m Chloe, a final year English and Social Anthropology student and I would love to be your C&E officer for qubsu! I am qualified for this role as I have passion for what it entails, and the practical experience to back it up. Throughout my time at Queen’s I have been involved in student community and leadership at various levels, including as an active Student Councilor, sitting on the ‘Standing Committee’- a panel which focuses on both club and soc and RAG development– two integral facets to c&e’s remit.
I’ve spent time as your women’s officer for the SU, sitting on executive management committee; launching a Belfast wide sexual harassment “Ask for Angela” campaign, piloting in your locals, like Parlour and Cuckoo. This has put in place safeguarding mechanisms which will directly benefit *your safety* whilst having fun.
I have been on committee for the LITERIFIC debating society for two years, acting as Outreach officer and Secretary/Vice President. Through this I’ve gained key insight to the benefits and struggles of student activities on campus, successfully obtaining major external sponsorships and raising over £500 for rag organising a “Drunk Lectures” event. I have used my position to bring light to important issues such as language rights, climate action and period poverty; collaborating For two years with the national trust in bringing students from queen’s to a weekend festival to debate topics which matter to them.
I have been a Course rep for three years, arguing your corner on issues such as accessibility to career information and aid to Erasmus students. Balancing all of this with part-time work has provided me with a beneficial perspective and I still feel like I haven’t sufficiently given back!
1. Digital community
it is important we retain our identity and Community against the transition into the new build of our union, For this to happen, and the increasing difficulty to find space, we need to stay connected online. I will assist the su with a digital rebrand, bringing visibility to important services like advice su, allowing students to find social opportunities, Bringing transparency to how the union is ran.
If elected I will work with marketing to research the possible development of an app, streamlining content to a more accessible and user friendly forum.
In the meantime, the increased coordinated use and promotion of social media groups and pages, including an opinion forum for students to chat and find friends. This acts as a spring board, or hub for student life, helping those who feel vulnerable be less alone.
2. Sustainable Campus
As VP C&e, I will campaign the university to provide the terms laid out in the recently passed Green New Deal. This includes holding Queen’s Management accountable to the interests of its environmentally conscious student body becoming net Carbon Neutral by 2030 and divestment from companies who are contributors to the fossil fuel Industry.
I will:
- Campaign the University on curriculum changes, providing education on environmental impact, encouraging students to act sustainably in both their current personal and future professional live
- Make Green Spaces more accessible to the Student Body, optimizing space use
Reduction of Waste
- An evaluation of Single Use Plastic on Campus and its associated Commercial Services, with research into suitable alternatives, in the aim of elimination by 2022, as per the Green New Deal
- An Increased number of Water Fountains across Campus, encouraging a rise in re-usable bottle usage
- Work to increase the availability of recycling facilities in both study and social areas
- HOST multiple ‘Swap-Shop’ events for Students to repurpose Clothing and furniture
3. EMPLOYABILITY SERVICES
students Are Increasingly struggling financially, which in turn has taken a toll on mental health.
I will
· Create cv workshops and “How-to” workshops on answering interview questions
· Increase promotion of volunteer su and the development of partnership with local businesses and industry connections to provide work experience
· Increased access and visibility to already offered career services, grants and bursaries
· Establish a working group to develop career visibility in queen’s for humanity students, as they are often left behind by management when it comes to career fairs and advice days
· Campaign on awareness of support structures for student workers, particularly bar staff, in relation to their rights surrounding working conditions and breaks.
4. Campaign training
This role isn’t just about platforming movements I have personal attachments to, but facilitating the making of your own noise! I will co-ordinate campaign training, to help you get the most attention to your important issues, optimizing success.
This will include social media training to get the best digital outreach, public speaking workshops, event planning and help in matching up your passions with internal/external movements which specialize in your interests! This networking is ideal for successfully instigating change or awareness.
to make sure you get the best engagement, I will host a market-stall style “Find your Passion” event where other students can learn about your work, and get involved too!
Along with this, I will support the Student Renters Group and fight against off-campus discipline as these reference major issues which directly impact the wellbeing of you, the students.
5. Accessibility for Clubs and Socs
Clubs and societies are pinnacle to student engagement on campus, and should be given as much support as possible. if elected I will facilitate social media and graphics training for committee members, first aid training for sport clubs, and provide support on obtaining external sponsorships to increase engagement with the wider community. I will also work on an available-to-take all-year-round online questionnaire which matches students with clubs or movements on campus which suit their interests. On top of this, I will coordinate a hustings which all political parties on campus would be invited to.
- TO FOSTER SUPPORT NETWORKS AMONGST STUDENT LEADERS THEMSELVES, I WOULD FORM A “Women in Clubs and Socs” FORUM, WHICH WOULD LOOK AT ISSUES OF ACCESSIBILITY AND WELFARE IN RELATION TO INSTITUTIONAL BARRIERS AND DISCRIMINATION.
- Engage with and ensure the Harassment and Bullying Policies are in their most impactful form, safeguarding student wellbeing, facilitating an environment where you can relax and enjoy yourself, knowing there are mechanisms in place to take care of you.
6. Engagement Evaluation
There is a growing loneliness amongst students, negatively impacting mental health and happiness. I plan to conduct a university wide survey on social engagement with a particular emphasis on isolation and pressure in high contact hour faculties and international students. From there, we can provide tailored opportunities for social engagement, not expecting students to fit the pre-made mould of “How-and-when-to-have-fun”, increasing community spirit.
A way to improve this now is to provide events for international students during weekends and holiday seasons, particularly the summer months.
