Peter McMurray

Passionate about providing a conservative leaning, Christian viewpoint while advocating for the mental wellbeing of mature and part-time students, and providing a voice for those often under-represented within the SU. Past experience as MHLS Faculty Officer and a very active contributor to Student Council. Currently both a part time and mature student. Psychiatrist Keen to improve engagement of mature students like myself who can often feel isolated and not a part of the SU community

Currently working as MHLS Faculty Officer and I have formed strong partnerships with the SU team and Faculty staff. Have very actively participated in Student Council and have brought forward motions advocating for support of healthcare staff during the nursing strike, advocating for improvements in QUB and Northern Irish mental health provision, and encouraging QUBSU to take a stand against religious persecution happening in many parts of the world where QUB has commercial interests. (I have submitted 6 motions so far this academic year to council, and have been commended on the high level of research and work that goes into them). But I still have more work to do and ensuring the policies are enacted and built upon over the next academic year.

I am passionate about advocating for student mental health, and have brought 3 motions to Student Council in the past year regarding reforming mental health care within QUB. I am a psychiatrist and will be bringing that insight and perspective to Executive Management Committee discussions around student mental health services

I see this role as providing a voice for the voiceless within QUBSU. The voice of mature students is often overlooked but I will ensure our voice gets heard at all levels of the management structure, and that SU funds are allocated to meeting our needs, as well as the needs of undergraduates who are more interested in wild nights out. I want to see board game nights, book clubs and alcohol free socialising options available for all students

As a part-time, mature student I feel passionately about improving student engagement with the SU and showing it isn't just for undergraduates

As a mature student who is conservatively alligned politically often that voice can be missing within SU politics and it would be my intention to represent that cohort who feel that the SU is unrepresentative of where they land regarding politics and world-view. We need a greater range of opinions and ideas in our SU if we are to be truly diverse and a University that promotes equality and respect for all.

I pledge to represent the issues that affect mature students such as balancing work/family life with study

I intend to bring a Christian perspective to ethical and moral debates at student council, including being passionately pro-life. Many students feel current SU policies go against their personal beliefs, and I will ensure their voice is heard, and taken seriously.

I work as a doctor while also studying part-time and will approach this role in an empathetic, passionate and motivated manner

Fair and appropriate representation is an important concern for me. Presently many demographic groups of students are under-represented by SU council, and we have policies which lack widespread support from the student body - I want to try and tackle that imbalance and provide a voice for people who often aren't heard or taken seriously in our university
