Candidate for the position of Part-Time - Women Students' Officer

Jill McManus

Vote Jill McManus for Women's Officer on 24th and 25th February to tackle period poverty, fight for your access to reproductive healthcare and campaign around sexual health and consent on campus!

Hi everyone! I'm Jill, a fourth year medical student and I'm running for the position of Women's Officer at QUBSU.
I'm currently the Women's Officer for NUS-USI, the student movement in Northern Ireland, and have several years of experience campaigning for abortion rights in Northern Ireland.

This year, I hope to focus on three key areas:

  • Period Poverty
  • Reproductive Healthcare and Rights
  • Sexual Health and Consent

PERIOD POVERTY
I plan on raising awareness of campaigns such as Menstruation Matters, and The Homeless Period Belfast, as well as facilitating free sanitary products in toilets on campus.

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
I have campaigned for several years for the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland. I believe access to contraception and abortion is a fundamental right, and hope to put together an information book on accessing emergency contraception, and unplanned pregnancy options. I also will campaign with Student Officer Equality and Diversity on Project Choice QUBSU.

SEXUAL HEALTH AND CONSENT
At least 25% of students have experienced unwanted sexual contact in higher or further education, according to research from NUS-USI. I believe education on sexual health and consent is the key way of combating sexual violence and ensuring students know about healthy relationships and sex. I plan on working with the Student Officers for Welfare and Equality and Diversity to push for education, including consent workshops. I also plan to raise awareness of campaigns such as Raise Your Voice NI.
