Candidate for the position of Student Officer Equality & Diversity

Image for Roisin Muirhead

Roisin Muirhead

As an avid campaigner of social and environmental justice I have engaged in grassroot activism as President of the Politics, Philosophy and Economics society as well as Treasurer of the QUB Green Party. As a student with caring responsibilities, I understand the weaknesses in the support system here at Queens and I know there is a long way to go to make every student feel completely at home, which is why I hope you will give me your vote to help make these changes happen!

· Proactive stance against racial and sexual harassment

To combat sexual harassment, I plan to increase the scope and scale of consent workshops and develop a more approachable and accessible reporting system.

I will continue to advance the Pro-Choice campaign and improve the welfare structure so students who face unplanned pregnancies are fully supported.

To ensure that the requirements of transgender students are met, I will campaign for a quick and easy means of changing names and gender on canvas.

To promote scholarships for asylum seekers I will continue to work with Student Action for Refugees and HAPANI to ensure that information about the scholarship is easily accessible and that they have adequate support in completing the application and obtaining the relevant documentation.

· Empower Students from Lower Income Households

As a student with caring responsibilities, I understand the weakness in the support system at Queens and will work to improve welfare of these students by introducing more schemes like the Student Carers Scholarship.

I will campaign for childcare support to be made available for parents, as students should not face this financial barrier to education.

I will also work towards making university more affordable for individuals from lower income households by increasing hardship availability and campaigning for a living wage to be paid to student workers on campus.

· Disability Equality and Illness Support

I will work to ensure that the financial needs of students with disabilities are being met and introduce workshops and career events tailored to students with disabilities.

One of the largest problems facing students today is the toll that the stress of university places on their mental health. To create a stronger support network for students here at Queens I aim to implement well-being initiatives, including funded activities like mindfulness classes.

· Encouraging Cultural Identities

To encourage a firmer sense of belonging for international students, I will work towards the production of more intersociety events to build a wider extracurricular community. This includes supporting the fantastic work that has been done to celebrate all cultural identities through initiatives such as Qulture Shock.

I will also push for an interfaith centre on campus to give all students access to a quiet place to practice their faith.

To build on the Irish language policy of the Student Union, I will campaign for bilingual signage to be implemented throughout Queen’s University.
