Conan MacGillivray

Second Year Course Rep, Advocating for Future Advocates. Demanding: A considerate, empathetic approach to assessments during and post-COVID, Greater coherence between law with politics/languages and straight law, Proper consideration for students with disabilities, Wide representation of women and minority groups in readings.

Advocating for Future Advocates

Profile

  • My name is Conan, I am a second year Law with Politics student.
  • I am a Course Rep and have been since first year.
  • I have helped achieve fairer deadlines and better organisation by the School of Law during this time.
    • For example- getting EU law coursework pushed back last semester and ensuring Canvas organisation was improved.

Addressing COVID-19

  • Ensuring that year averages are not allowed to fall behind previous years to account for the pandemic.
  • Allowing uncapped, free resits for anybody who wants them.

Post COVID-19

  • Any student going into next year will not have done in-person exams for the previous two years and will therefore not have gained vital experience doing them.
  • If the School of Law uses in-person exams next year, it must take this fact into account and provide lenient marking, especially for third years who will be doing in-person exams for the first time with 60% at stake.

Greater Coherence Between Modules and Courses

  • Different module coordinators should take other modules into account to ensure that exams and coursework deadlines do not clash.
  • This is vital for law with/ politics and languages students, who have experienced clashes in their contact hours. This is unacceptable.
  • There should be a single, coherent reading week for all law students, planned in line with the schools of HAPP and AEL to allow for law with politics/languages students.
    • This will allow a chance to catch up on notes and prepare for coursework and exams.

Disability Support

  • As someone diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and OCD, I am extremely understanding and approachable to disabled students.
  • Take-home exams should be planned so one extra day is allowed for students with disabilities who are entitled to extra time in ordinary exams and coursework extensions.

Wider Representation

  • Module conveners should make a conscious effort to ensure representation of women, people of colour, the LGBT community and people with disabilities in readings.
  • Additionally, more legal career paths should be showcased at QUB career events, as currently the representatives are overwhelmingly in the commercial sector.

Please vote for me if you want the QUB School of Law to put all if this into action!
