Candidate for the position of Part-Time - LGBT+ Students' Officer

Megan McIvor

A vote for me is a vote for your LGBTQ+ community at Queens!

LGBT OFFICER

I.          About Me

I'm Megan McIvor, a second year Geography undergraduate student at Queens.

Having previously had 3 years of voluntary experience in an LGBT youth organisation, I have a clear insight into what struggles are faced by young LGBTQ+ people. I hope to use my knowledge from this time coupled with my own experiences at university to help inform and make changes to help support Queens LGBTQ+ community.

II.         Aim As LGBT Officer

My main aim is to provide LGBT students with resources and facilities to avoid further unnecessary isolation at university. If elected, my goal is to empower students to be their most authentic selves on campus, to not feel as though their identity will in any way hinder their experience at university.

III.        Objectives

·           To achieve this, I will encourage the creation of more social spaces on campus* for the Queen’s community to feel safe and supported, regardless of orientation or gender identity

·           I will push for the implementation of an opt-in 'peer mentor' system for all students self-identifying as LGBTQ+ who need the support whilst registering with the university

·           As a community on campus, links between Queens and external LGBT organisations are crucial for the promotion of a wider social reach for the students of Queens. If elected, I will strive to strengthen pre-existing connections and create new ones with established support networks.

·           I will ensure that LGBTQ+ issues raised to the union or within faculties are not ignored and that you feel safe on campus

·           My goal is to ensure all faculties in the university offer the same level of support for LGBT students by understanding the challenges met by LGBTQ+ people and remaining committed to supporting their students regardless of how they identify.

·           I will endevor to work in conjunction with the Trans Student officer and Equality and Diversity officer on current issues, and to assist with bettering the university-wide attitude towards LGBTQ+ people.

*Whilst COVID restrictions are in place, seeking means of creating these spaces whilst adhering to government guidance on social distancing etc.

IV.        Vote!

If you want to see change made possible at Queens, vote for Megan McIvor as your Part-Time LGBT Officer between the 1st of March and the 4th of March!
