WHO ARE WE?
We are the Trócaire Soicety At QUB, our purpose is to raise funds and awareness for the work carried out by Trócaire and Caritas Internationalis worldwide. We are always happy to have new members come along and join in our work to support human rights and development worldwide.
At the end of every academic year we pass on money we have raised during the previous 12 months to Trócaire to aid in their mission to promote integral human development so that people in the worst off and most disadvantaged communities are free to flourish and live in peace and dignity. Together we work to ensure that our natural environment is managed responsibly and sustainably in the interests of the entire human family.
WHAT DOES THE SOCIETY DO?
Throughout the year the society holds a variety of different types of events, ranging from "Trad For Trócaire", with all the pints and craic you can get, with proceeds going to Trócaire, to Bun Sales, the Belfast Marathon and a variety of educational talks. Really, there's something for anyone and everyone who wants to get involved.
In terms this year of changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope to be proceeding as usual with a lot of our events this year, with social distancing being implemented through moving many events outside, online or in a more distanced environment (online marathon anyone?). So don't let distance keep you from helping those in need and fighting for what is right throughout the world.
WHAT DOES THE MONEY GO TOWARDS?
Trócaire works in over 20 countries across the world to relieve poverty and tackle injustice. We help support them to help communities to live with independence and dignity.
To end poverty we must address the root causes of why we live in an unequal world. We aid Trócaire's support of people to raise their voices and to come together to use people power to create change.
Currently Trócaire is attempting to tackle the COVID-19 Pandemic in some of the poorest regions in the world. Below Carl Frampton discusses the need to provide support.
Trócaire works with women and men to challenge gender inequality. They also work to stop violence against women and empower women to have their voices heard.
Some of the impact Trócaire has had:
Trócaire's programmes train women on leadership and help them get involved in decision-making processes.
830 women in Rwanda got access to loans not available through commercial lenders in 2019.
812 women survivors of violence in Ethiopia underwent counselling in 2019.
Trócaire established 24 support groups in Zimbabwe to support 399 survivors of violence in 2019.
Over 150 police officers, judicial officials and doctors in Sierra Leone were trained on evidence gathering and medical examination protocols for victims of sexual offences in 2019.
Trócaire supports people and communities to challenge human rights abuses. They also engage governments to listen to people power.
Some of the impact in this area includes:
Over 2,500 human rights defenders in Honduras trained to protect their rights and security.
3,484 Palestinian women and men received legal representation or psycho-social support
Legal defence for human rights defender Abelino Chub Caal who was released from prison after being held for two years without trial.
212 legal cases taken in support of human rights.
Trócaire provides emergency aid where needed most. They support people affected by natural disasters and conflict.
Trócaire has impacted this area by:
520,000 people displaced by conflict reached with emergency help in 2019.
Medical care for 385,000 people in the South Kordofan region.
365,000 people affected by conflict and Ebola supported with aid in 2019.
Health care for 218,000 people, particularly pregnant women and new mothers.
Trócaire supports people to gain access to food, land and their natural resources. They also help people to cope with the devastating effects of climate change by joining people together to fight for their rights.
Farming families have increased their yields in all the communities we support.
In Ethiopia, 119,000 people received access to irrigation, crops and training.
In Malawi, 4,259 people secured access to irrigation. This has enabled farmers to increase the number of harvests from one to two or three a year.
In Rwanda, 1,526 people benefited from farming techniques to reduce the impacts of climate change. 1,581 families received drought-resistant crops. Over 640 families now have access to rain harvesting facilities.
A total of 37,894 people took action to defend their right to land and water.
